Sustaining Hope – Spring 2026: A Gathering That Opened Eyes and Stirred Hearts

This spring’s Sustaining Hope gathering at Redhill Methodist Church was a powerful reminder of what it means to be a truly global, justice‑seeking church. Rev Nigel Cowgill challenged us to rethink old assumptions about “host and guest,” reminding us that “everyone truly belongs equally at the table” and inviting us to see how deeply interconnected our world has become.

We were then moved by Mary Barrett’s extraordinary 30‑year journey supporting people held in immigration detention near Gatwick. Her stories—of trust built through simple weekly visits, of people living with trauma, and of the harsh reality of “indefinite” detention—brought home the human cost behind the headlines. Her account of the Refugee Tales pilgrimage showed how storytelling, solidarity, and walking together can change public understanding and restore dignity.

The below report is rich with insight, challenge, and hope. If you care about justice, welcome, or the Methodist Church’s calling in an interconnected world, you’ll find this a deeply inspiring read.
