Voices of Power: Black History month concert
An invitation & testimony from JJ Baiden-Amissah, trustee with BARCO (Black Anti-Racism Community Organisation) and Administrator at Hove Methodist Church, Brighton and Hove Circuit.
Black History Month, for me, is far more than a moment in the calendar. It’s a reference point — a time to reflect, embrace, and celebrate the beauty and richness of diversity in our communities.
Through my work as a trustee with BARCO (Black Anti-Racism Community Organisation) and in my role as Administrator at Hove Methodist Church, I’ve witnessed how culture, background and faith intertwine to shape, uplift, and empower lives. African culture, in particular, has deep and undeniable significance in religion — with a rich spiritual history that thrived long before missionary or colonial influence. This belief fuels my commitment to realising and consolidating my culture as part of my faith, and it’s why I’m so passionate about Voices of Power.
On Saturday 25th October 2–6 pm, at Hove Methodist Church, we’ll gather for an unforgettable afternoon of music, poetry, drama, food, and community.
There will be performances from:
Harps Choral UK – gospel and choral harmonies
Isaac Jengwa (Jengwa Music) – and his soulful acoustic sounds
Drama performances
Roy Mcfarlane (Poet, Playwright and National Canal Poet Laureate
Jazz like that - Jazz band
Alongside the stage programme, you can also enjoy:
Authentic Ghanaian cuisine and familiar food options
Community stalls, including:
Culture Connect Project – bead-making workshops & traditional garments (supporting orphans in Ghana)
BARCO – Brighton’s Black Anti-Racism Community Organisation (with merchandise available)
Afrori Books – Brighton’s only Black-owned bookstore, showcasing Black authors and stories
Many who know me will understand how important my culture is to me alongside my Christian faith. My heritage shapes how I worship, how I connect with others, and how I express my spirituality. For me, welcoming a Ghanaian choir of this calibre is deeply personal. It’s a statement of pride in my roots and a reminder of the profound connection between African culture and the Christian story. To see that heritage honoured and expressed on stage will be deeply moving for me.
I invite you to join me and witness this powerful moment where faith and culture unite to inspire, connect, and transform. When we can all stand firm in power and pride, embracing our shared humanity
Tickets start at just £5 – with proceeds supporting vital community projects.
